In the category of things that are more than the sum of their parts, coffee and tea must be at the top of the list.
Hot tea on a cold, rainy day has a poetry to it that makes the moment true somehow – more than just existing, the hot tea on a cold, rainy day moment is a form of elevated experience. It makes no difference that you didn’t have to climb a mountain to achieve this truth. Some magic, thankfully, can come to us easily. Some poetry, as it turns out, also smells really nice.
Both coffee and tea can uplift us with aroma. That sounds cheesy, and it is, but the point stands.
And if poetry, as it is lived, comes down to fully appreciating the present moment and stretching this brief iota of time so that we explore all its dimensions, then coffee and tea are like the Whitman and Emerson of our days and nights, delivering poetry that transcends the momentary and makes the moment into magic.
